Staff from five Sutton pubs are taking on a fundraising challenge in a bid to take part in a charitable fancy dress race to raise money for cancer.

The Star, Gander Inn, Lord Nelson, Ye Olde Red Lion and The Old Bank need to raise enough money to win a place in a Spartan chariot cycling race for Cancer Research UK.

The event, which takes place on June 20, will have eight chariots with twelve seats and staff will have to pedal for five miles across central and east London.

Organised by the Stonegate Pub Company, the event, will also involve around 114 pubs within the southern region.

Colin Hawkins, Operations Director at Stonegate Pub Company said: “We’ve all been touched by cancer in some way in our lives, so we wanted to do our bit to raise money to help stamp out this awful disease.”

Each pub will have to raise money to receive a chariot and the staff will be expected to call on its customers and visitors to help raise enough funds to secure a chariot.

The pubs that raise the most money will be given a chariot and automatically be entered into the race.
