Rail commuters returning to work after the bank holiday break faced disruption in Weybridge this morning because of a points failure.

South Western Railway sent a message to passengers saying lines towards London Waterloo were blocked because of the problem at Weybridge.

"Network Rail engineers are on site to ascertain and rectify the problem. A set of points is the part of the track that moves, allowing trains to divert onto other lines.

"The nature of this failure also means that only one line towards Woking is open instead of two, meaning delays are probable in that direction.

"Train services running to and from this station may be cancelled, delayed or diverted at short notice. We anticipate disruption until 10am today," said the message.

There were also delays to First Great Western services between Reading and London Paddington because of damage to the overhead electric wires. Fewer trains were able to run on some lines towards London Paddington.

Passengers were told that services running to and from these stations may be cancelled, delayed or revised.
