A Surbiton High School pupil from Cheam defeated more than 2,000 entrants to win a National Portrait Gallery photography competition.
Year 9 student Flossie Hills scooped first prize with her image, “Quintessential”, which features her grandparents who are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this year.
The competition ran as part of the Martin Parr “Only Human” exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, and her photo will be displayed there until early June.
It’s said to “reveal the eccentricities of modern life with affection and insight, as depicted by one of Britain’s most celebrated photographers”.
Mr Parr, who was born in Epsom, judged the nationwide competition before he decided to award Flossie with first prize.
He said he chose the photo as the winner of the competition because he was “attracted by the symmetry and intimacy of the piece” – as well as its red cushions.
“I was amazed that I won, and it was incredible to meet Martin who is a fantastic photographer that I really look up to,” Flossie said.
“To have my work displayed at the National Portrait Gallery is a dream come true.”
Her photograph will remain on display at the National Portrait Gallery until June 4.
