Kingston Under 12s rugby team were invited to meet the mayor after beating the odds to win a regional cup competition.

Kingston Rugby Football Club (RFC) Under 12 side began playing a stratified version of rugby known as junior rugby this year.

The club are based on Hook Road in Chessington and pride themselves on an inclusive and welcoming approach.

Despite a small, eclectic squad, the team have already stormed to success this year.

Invited to play in the Junior Waterfall Cup (Chairman's Competition) in late April, Kingston Under 12s battled to a stunning victory over five matches, beating Camberley 3-2 in the cup final.

Speaking to the Surrey Comet following the cup win, Head Coach Pete McDonagh praised his team's remarkable efforts:

"It's our first year of playing junior rugby. We've got a very small squad in rugby terms pulled from non-traditional rugby families and were going up against bigger clubs in Surrey."

"We won the final and competed against big clubs with five times as many kids as we have in our squad. The boys had a great run," Mr McDonagh said.

The head coach highlighted the underdog stature of the club next to the demands expected of them in the regional game and said their success had been "incredible."

"Given our size and the competition, and having played so many games, over the last two years we've had an incredibly successful time," Mr McDonagh said.

The club's scheduled meeting with the Mayor of Kingston is currently being finalised.
