Bright green electric bikes will soon be popping up around Croydon.

This month, a year-long trial will see 200 electronic bikes brought to Croydon.

The dockless e-bikes will be provided by Lime – you might have seen the bright green bikes in Brent, Ealing and Islington.

Last year the council ruled out Santander, or Boris Bikes because parts of the borough are so steep.

If the trial is a success even more bikes could come to Croydon.

Each is fitted with GPS, locks, a bell and front and rear lights and reflectors.

Councillor Stuart King, cabinet lead for environment and transport, said: “Electric bikes open up cycling to more people helping make journeys that would have been too long or too hilly easier.

“We want Croydon to become one of the greenest boroughs in London and bringing a scheme like this into the borough is one of the ways we are trying to achieve this.”

Will they be blocking up the streets?

Busy areas with high footfall can be excluded from the service to so they don’t get blocked up with bikes.

And Lime will be able to collect and redistribute the bikes to key locations when it’s needed.

Jaanaki Momaya, general manager for Lime UK, said: “It’s exciting to be able to work together to bring our zero-emission transport offering to the borough and provide residents with a new sustainable way to travel.

“At Lime, we want to help Londoners tackle the dangerous levels of air pollution in the capital and empower residents to reduce the environmental impact of their journeys.”
