Jason Pearce isn’t taking a starting berth in Charlton’s defence for granted despite starring in their 1-0 win at Wycombe on Tuesday.

Favoured over Naby Sarr to partner Patrick Bauer at the back, the captain scored the game’s only goal at Home Park to extend the Addicks’ unbeaten run to ten matches as they narrowed the gap on the top two to four points.

An injury hit season has hampered the former Portsmouth, Leeds and Wigan man this campaign and he’s the first to admit that Sarr has more than taken his chance in his absence.

“He doesn’t deserve to be dropped,” he said.

“I’m an honest person, honest with myself.

“I got injured, Naby got an opportunity and he’s taken it.

“I obviously want to play, it’s frustrating but it’s a team game, he’s done well and I support him and Pat (Bauer) all the time.

“I got my opportunity today, felt like I took it, and we’ll just see what the manager does at the weekend.

“If I get called upon I'll always do my best.

“I’m captain of the club, everyone knows what I’m about.

“The game tonight was perfect for me, but Saturday might be different.

“If I’m not selected, I’ll keep supporting the team as we all want to achieve the same thing.”

Pearce has appeared 27 times this season for Lee Bowyer’s side this campaign, and although he got on the scoresheet at Wycombe, it was the win that pleased the defender.

“I’ve had a tough time with injuries unfortunately, it’s the way I play- I will pick injuries.

“I’m just pleased to get out there, got a goal and a clean sheet, but most importantly, the victory.”

Speaking of his goal second goal of the season Pearce, who volleyed home Josh Cullen’s cross, said:

“I was going to run back, I thought the attack had finished, but I stayed there in case a good ball came in, which it did, and I was there to finish.

“I was fortunate to pop up with a goal, which turned out to be the match winner.

“I’m delighted.”
