A fire hit an office block being refurbished into flats on Blagdon Road in New Malden last night (March 31).

London Fire Brigade (LFB) said they received a call Sunday evening after a passerby spotted a fire at the block refurbishment underway.

LFB said: "The Brigade was called at 2140 and the fire was under control by 2331. The fire was noticed by a passer-by who called 999.

"Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to an office block under refurbishment into flats on Blagdon Road in New Malden."

"Part of a flat on the seventh floor was damaged by fire. Firefighters prevented the fire from spreading further."

Crews from across South West London attended the scene to help put out the blaze, LFB said.

The fire service added that the cause of the fire was being investigated, which is standard procedure following such incidents.

LFB said: "Fire crews from New Malden, Surbiton, Wimbledon, Kingston and Sutton fire stations attended the scene.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation."
