An altercation between two “street drinkers” in a betting shop in North Cheam is what led to a recent stabbing, according to police.
Officers arrested a suspect on suspicion of attempted murder after a man was stabbed in his head in London Road on March 27.
Scotland Yard say the victim’s injuries are “not life-threatening” while the suspect was remanded into custody following the incident shortly after 4pm.
But it’s believed it was a “specific incident” and not thought to be causing the force “wider concern”.
Following the incident the council’s chief executive Helen Bailey sent a statement to Sutton councillors.

She said: “I am advised by the police that this was an altercation in a betting shop between street drinkers – they have arrested one and the other has minor injuries – whilst concerning of itself, it does appear to have been a specific incident and not to be causing the police wider concern.”

The attack comes following two serious knife-related incidents in recent days, with a shopkeeper having been fatally stabbed following a robbery in Harrow (March 24).
And not long after a 15-year-old boy was left in a critical condition when he was knifed in Lewisham on a late Monday afternoon (March 25).
