Eighty firefighters worked all night and through this morning to try and control a huge blaze in Mitcham.
Officers were called to a waste storage centre on Benedict Road last night at 8.17pm.
A large stack of rubbish was alight at the Suez centre, but was under control by 11.23am.
Station Manager Chris Line, who is at the scene, said: "The fire is now under control but firefighters will remain at the scene throughout the day to continue damping down and turning over remaining pockets of fire.
“This is likely to create smoke in the local area and we would continue to urge residents to please keep their doors and windows shut.
"There is some disruption to roads in the local area as a result of the fire and we would kindly ask motorists using the roads close to the waste storage centre to please not drive over our hoses as firefighters are still using them on the fire.”
The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
