A Carshalton woman who felt porn “empowered” her after years of “feeling subservient to men” has embarked on a trip abroad to explore the industry.

Nariece Jordan visited Spain alongside six other people in their 20s with varying attitudes to adult entertainment, looking at how they felt before and after.

They meet producers, performers and people “fighting back” against the industry in a new BBC Three documentary series called ‘Porn Laid Bare’.

It looks at how porn affects them, their relationships and wider society.

Talking about her relationship before the trip, Nariece said: “It played a big part in my life. I feel it has empowered me. Growing up I had bad experiences with men that made me think my role in sex was to simply please them, but watching and learning from porn made me feel more empowered in my own sexuality.

“It gave me the confidence to experiment and to be more vocal in asking for the kind of sex I wanted, rather than just being there to please other people.”

The new series comes as 18 to 25-year-olds surveyed across the UK said have been worried about being addicted to porn.

A third also said they’ve had “riskier” sex due to it, and more than half of those asked believe porn creates “impossible” standards for beauty and bodies.

The survey of more than 1,000 people, carried out by Deltapoll, shows more than three-quarters of young men (77 per cent) and nearly half of young women (47) admitted to watching porn within the past month.

Reflecting on her experience after the trip, Nariece said: “I came to realise while porn empowered me personally and gave me back my voice after years of feeling subservient to men, it had damaged many people working in the industry who had experienced abuse, exploitation and drugging.

“My eyes have really been opened now. I don't use mainstream porn anymore, the only thing I watch now is my own private homemade porn which I know is more ethical.”

‘Porn Laid Bare’ is available on BBC Three from Thursday, March 14.
