The homeless man whose clothes were stained with bleach when a Southern Rail worker poured water around him has refused the help offered to him.

Emergency services were called to Sutton station this afternoon (February 26) following reports of a person unwell, but after being assessed by paramedics he was not taken to hospital.

Sutton Council is understood to have offered him a week of accommodation but he has since turned this offer down, while Southern has also reportedly provided him with new clothing.

The man, named locally as Toby Sawyer, said he had been living on the streets after having previously been in prison and having been stabbed multiple times in the past.

When asked why he did not accept help from the council, he said: “I do not want it. F*** them all.”

When further asked what he wanted to help resolve the situation, he added: “F*** all.”

Mr Sawyer was still in the same clothes which were stained by the dirty water when the incident occurred around lunchtime on Sunday (February 24).

He was laying under the noticeboard at the station in effectively the same spot as before, with a black duffel bag containing the new clothes and cans of alcohol.

The recorded incident, shared more than 10,000 times on Facebook, has led to three Southern workers being suspended and police treating it as a common assault.

Southern’s passenger services director Angie Doll says the train operating company is taking the incident “extremely seriously”, having since apologised.

Many have since expressed major concerns over the incident, while others have come forward and alleged he was exhibiting verbally aggressive behaviour before it was filmed.

Mum Kirstie Webster, from Banstead, claims she was the victim of his “intimidating” behaviour in the lead-up to the water being poured around him.

The 32-year-old was with her four-year-old son at the ticket machine outside Sutton station before feeling threatened by his actions.

Another person has claimed themselves to be a witness and several others allege he has previously behaved in a similar fashion.

A British Transport Police spokeswoman said they were called to reports of an “aggressive male” outside the station at 12.42pm on that day, before he was “moved on quickly”.

However, she has since said there is “no evidence” on the force's systems to suggest the two incidents were linked, though any investigation into it would likely be separate to the video.
