The Council have cracked down on two flats allegedly used as dens for prostitution and drug dealing after neighbours complained of round the clock intimidation from visitors.

According to residents of Sutherland Court, a constant stream of callers brought with it prostitution, vandalism, noise and disturbances at all hours.

Neighbours say they were constantly woken by their doorbells being rung, their communal door was damaged and their front garden fly-tipped.

Earlier this month closure orders were obtained by the Council and CCHA Housing Association, evicting tenants from one flat and banning the other from receiving visitors.

Councillor Hamida Ali, cabinet member for safer Croydon and Communities, said: “These orders show how good partnership work can help improve a neighbourhood and ensure a safer, calmer, environment for the tenants and residents who have been affected by this antisocial behaviour.

"No one should feel fearful and anxious in their own home.”

The problems first came to light last spring when, despite CCHA home visits and warnings, the anti-social behaviour continued.

This led to a police investigation, with officers assisting with joint visits.

Residents have already fed back that the changes have had a positive effect, with disturbances reducing.

CCHA have made improvements to the block to allay safety concerns by installing magnetic locks on the communal doors.

As reports continued police took further action, raiding three flats on the block in August 2018 having received intelligence of suspected drugs and criminal activity.

These investigations are still ongoing.

Tracy Cullen, Chief Executive at CCHA said: “I am particularly grateful to CCHA staff who have handled this situation with the professionalism and sensitivity required in order to achieve this successful outcome.

"Our continued partnership work with Croydon Council and MET Police has been invaluable in this difficult situation”.

CCHA will now pursue possession of the properties through the County Court.
