Rail passengers were greeted with free Oysters at Epsom station this morning (February 25) to mark its inclusion into the Oyster card transport network.

Collaborating with Epsom Business Improvement District (Epsom BID), a fishmonger from the area offered passengers passing through the station to celebrate the opening of Oyster cards at the station, which Epsom BID said was a boon for businesses in Epsom.

Andy Willmott, manager of the Epsom BID, said: "This is a great day for all the people who live, work and visit our wonderful town. The introduction of Oyster PAYG and contactless payment is a great step forward and we will continue to campaign for anything that assists and promotes the accessibility of Epsom."

Transport Secretary and Epsom and Ewell MP (Con) Chris Grayling was also present to promote the arrival of the Oyster scheme, which he had supported for the constituency.

Heigtened interest brought queues to Epsom station Monday morning as residents hoped to take advantage not only of the free oysters but also the improved connectivity and ease of travel offered by the Oyster Pay As You Go scheme.

Southern Railway announced last week that seven new stations would be added to the Oyster Pay As You Go (PAYG) scheme.

The stations added to the PAYG area were: Merstham, Redhill, Earlswood, Salfords, Horley, Gatwick Airport and Epsom.

Southern Railway said that Oyster card, contactless and mobile payments were now being accepted at all seven stations.
