Registration for the Surrey Youth Games (SYG) officially opened with free training sessions available for prospective competitors.

The games will pit the 11 boroughs in Surrey including Epsom and Ewell against each other across a range of sports.

Anyone wishing to represent the Borough can apply for the free training sessions which will run from April through June ahead of the main events on June 15 and 16.

Epsom and Ewell Council encouraged residents in the borough to join in, citing last year's successes, when the Borough placed second in the overall medals table.

Epsom and Ewell Council said: "Team Epsom and Ewell had great success in 2018 securing more medals in total than any other borough or district in Surrey, we hope to continue this success in the 2019 Games."

The Council announcement about the games also called on leaders from among the Borough's youth to come forward and become Ambassadors for the Games.

Epsom and Ewell Council said: "As a SSYG Young Ambassador you will help to promote the Games at your school. The main role of a Young Ambassador is to encourage as many people as possible to sign up for the Games. You will be supported with promotional material including flyers, posters and a DVD.

"Working together with the Council’s Leisure Developments team, you will be helping to increase the awareness of the event. You will also be helping more young people find out about how they can take part in free training sessions."

Featured sports in this year's event include an interesting range of events including lacrosse, tennis, netball and boccia.
