Penalties are part and parcel in the game of football, but what happened in Raynes Park last week was anything but ordinary.

Just ten minutes into a match between Horley Town and Raynes Park Vale FC, the home side was awarded a penalty.

So up stepped Seanan McKillop to try and put Raynes Park ahead.

But what happened next, nearly didn't happen at all.

"Our original penalty taker who actually filmed the goal was injured," McKillop told the Wimbledon Times.

"On the Saturday before we got a penalty which I missed, I was determined to take the next one as I was convinced me missing a penalty was just a one off."

So after a deep breath he lined up his shot, only to blast it against the upright.

But that's when the fun started.

"When I took the 'wonder penalty' and saw it hit the bar I walked off in disgust with myself for thinking I missed another one," McKillop added.

"I then heard one of the lads shout 'it’s coming back in' so I then turned around and saw it spin into the net. Unbelievable."

Indeed the video captured by teammate Charlie Marus showed the ball ricochet off the bar, go into the night sky off camera for a good three seconds before it came back down to earth and into the goal for the opener, much to the bemusement of Horley.

But neither McKillop nor the club thought anything would come from posting the footage online.

"Obviously no one knew the video would get so big so this has been great," the goalscorer said.

"Also obviously being a small club we are trying to get as much publicity for the club as possible.

"The club needs a new lease of life so we need all the help we can get."

The video, which was retweeted more than 100 times and liked nearly 200, had people calling it "the luckiest goal of all time."

Now McKillop is hoping some of that luck rubs off on the club itself.

"It’s always nice to get on the scoresheet," he said.

"Getting more recognition for the club is the main thing though.

"We need all the help we can get as we’ve got the bare minimum."
