Alan Suttie has lived in Mitcham for nearly 20 years and thinks the number of social housing buildings needs to increase.
That's why he was so shocked to learn that the property at 7 Spring Grove, which is part of the same estate that he lives in, has been put up for sale by housing association Peabody.
"It's been empty for about three months and then two or three weeks ago there was a notice saying there was going to be an auction," he said.
"People were very surprised.
"There is a need for social housing and especially in this area. It just isn't right to be selling it off for private accommodation."
Now Mr Suttie said people around the area are worried the same thing could happen to their homes.
"Say you go into hospital for six months, you might not have a home to come back to," he added.
"Selling off existing stock is counter to what should be happening.
"Peabody come with this social attitude, but now everyone is worried.
"It really stinks."
The auction is meant to take place tomorrow (February 19) and housing website Zoopla estimates the property's worth at £327,000.
Peabody has been approached for comment.
