The family and friends of a mum who was stabbed to death as she was reportedly on her way to pick her kids up from school have released an update.

Aliny Mendes, 39, was tragically killed in the Sparrow Farm junction of London Road during broad daylight on February 8.

One of the two men arrested by police – Ricardo Godinho, 41, of Kingston Road – was charged with her murder before being remanded into custody.

Since her death more than £50,000 has been fundraised as those close to her try to repatriate her body back to her native Brazil and hire a lawyer.

In an update, published by Vanessa Ferro, she said: “Aliny’s family and friends would like to take this opportunity to express our sincerest appreciation for the support and love we have received during this difficult time.

“We are overwhelmed by our community’s compassion and generosity, who have admirably come together and supported us – not only through our JustGiving page but also through prayers, flowers, kind words of condolences, fundraisers [etc].

“Thank you for showing us that we are not alone in our grief.

“Our main focus now is to honour Aliny as the amazing mother she was and fight for her children to stay together.

“Despite the kids still being held in government care, we are now in contact with the children and were able to visit them. They are coping as best they can given the circumstances.

“Two of Aliny’s family members have arrived in the UK, Tuesday morning, and so we will finally be able to commence bureaucratic proceedings – which we know will be anything but a straightforward process.

“Because of this, we ask the community to keep Aliny’s children in their prayers and send positive thoughts our way.

“Once again, thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.”
