1886 - The Statue of Liberty, designed by Auguste Bartholdi, was presented to America by France to mark the 100th anniversary of the declaration of Independence.
1948 - Sooty makes his first appearance, on BBC children's television.
1998 - Pacific Blue - the world's most powerful computer - is unveiled.
1999 - A poll claims The Exorcist' was the scariest film ever.
2000 - A tornado strikes Bognor and damages more then 100 houses.
2001 - An earthquake strikes five miles north of Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale. The tremor is also felt in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.
