Four police officers were allegedly assaulted at Croydon train stations in a single day of disorderly behaviour last week.

In the first incident last Thursday (February 7), at East Croydon station, three officers were allegedly pushed and kicked as they apprehended a 33-year-old following a report of racially aggravating behaviour and assault on a train.

Later that evening on officer was allegedly pushed by a 17-year-old as they conducted inquiries into reports of a fight at West Croydon station.

A BTP spokesman said: “Officers will always be among the first to head towards dangerous incidents, and while facing challenging situations on a daily basis is an expected part of the role, being harmed themselves will never be considered as another day in the job.

“We treat any assaults on our staff incredibly seriously and rigorously investigate any offenders to ensure they are brought before the courts.”

British Transport Police (BTP) officers were called to East Croydon shortly before 4pm to a report of racially-aggravated, threatening behaviour and an assault on board a train.

The suspect, from Croydon, reportedly pushed and shook one officer, kicked a second and then kicked a third as he was taken into custody.

He was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated assault, common assault, being drunk and disorderly and on three counts of assaulting an emergency worker.

BTP officers were then called to West Croydon at 7.11pm.

When conducting enquiries an officer approached a group of youths and was allegedly pushed by a 17-year-old, who was subsequently arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and a public order offence.

Another officer was injured later that evening as they searched a man at West Croydon following “suspicious behaviour.”

A kitchen knife and quantity of cannabis was found on his person.

Tyrell Gomeze, 20, from Chingford, was arrested and charged with possessing an offensive weapon and possession of a class B drug.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Westminster Magistrates on March 4.
