Champagne bottles from New Year’s Eve still haven’t been collected from the bins of one Croydon cul-de-sac.

After waiting nearly a month, residents are so fed up they say they will wheel their bins to Croydon Town Hall on Wednesday in protest.

Laurence Fisher of Aurelia Gardens in Thornton Heath says he and neighbours have repeatedly contacted the council and contractor Veolia but their recycling bins still have not been collected.

The 39-year-old said: “Every one of my neighbours have contacted the council and half of the people have had replies saying you need to contact Veolia.

“But they pass us back to the council – they’re playing table tennis now.”

And it is not the first time Mr Fisher has threatened to wheel his bins the two miles to the council offices.

In early January he said it was the seventh time in succession the general waste bins had not been emptied.

But before he started on his journey, the bins were conveniently collected.

“We’ve tried contacting the council, that hasn’t worked, we’ve tried contacting Veolia.

“The only thing left to do is to get as many people as we can and take our full bins to the council offices and leave it by their bins, which are always emptied.

“It is a two-mile walk but I don’t care anymore.

“The collections were promoted in these glossy leaflets but three quarters of these have never occurred.

“If the council spent the money on producing them, they should supply the service they they are offering.”

He added that now residents of the cul-de-sac have been putting extra bags of rubbish by their full bins which have been ransacked by foxes – meaning rubbish is now strewn across the road.

Mr Fisher said that when the new wheelie bin system was introduced he was optimistic about the new scheme but says it has not worked as well as he had hoped.

In September a new collection system was introduced in Croydon.

Most households recieved a new 240-litre wheelie bin for mixed paper and card as well as a 180-litre wheelie bin for general rubbish.

Existing 240-litre bins previously used for general waste are now used for recycling glass, plastic packaging, cans and cartons.

A spokesman for Croydon Council said: “We introduced a new collection routine in September which changed collection days for 75% of properties in the borough.

“This is designed to boost recycling rates to more than 50% over the next two years but has led to some inevitable disruption for which we apologise.

“Any missed collections should be reported online via My Account and extra collections will be organised as soon as possible.”

But Aurelia Gardens is not the only road having problems with the collections.

At Monday’s full council meeting, one resident asked Cllr Stuart Collins, cabinet member for clean, green Croydon why his bins in Rylandes Road, Selsdon, were not always collected when they should be.

Cllr Collins replied: “There are a number of properties that have experienced missed collections on more occasions than I would like.

“Now, I’ve personally said that I and the waste services managers will be going back to those properties that have had several missed collections and we will speak to the crews directly.

“I want to look Veolia staff in the eye and understand what’s going on here with these problem properties.

“Obviously the vast majority of properties across the borough are now having their collections on time.”
