Parking Wardens in Wandsworth are set to go on a four day strike, over a working conditions dispute.

The strike days are set to take place on January 24, 25, 31 and February 1, as GMB Southern members, working for NSL Parking, fight for better terms and conditions on an ex-local authority contract.

GMB members on Wandsworth NSL contracts do not all have sick pay, which is reportedly at the discretion of managers.

According to GMB, some members do not get sick pay even if they suffer an injury at work, despite being out in all weathers, riding motorcycles and bicycles all day.

The trade union are urging the council to review the contract in a bid to bring it back under their control.

Paul Grafton, GMB Regional Organiser said: "Our members in Wandsworth face regular abuse from the public, they are out in all weathers patrolling the streets to ensure they are kept clear for drivers and yet they have some of the worst terms and conditions of employment.

"GMB members are asking for the sick pay in line with the local authority. I would urge Wandsworth Council to review this highly lucrative contract in a bid to bring it back under local authority control where they belong.

"The strike days are the first of many planned."

A council spokesman said: “This is a matter that needs to be settled between the union and the company.

"We expect the company to make the necessary arrangements to comply with the terms of the contract and to ensure that it has sufficient numbers of staff in place on those days.”
