Close to 30 people, and one frightened feline, had to evacuate an apartment building in Deptford after fire broke out.

More than 40 firefighters along with six engines were called to Deals Gateway shortly before 2pm on Tuesday (January 21) following reports of a flat on fire within the building.

Upon arrival, crews discovered the fire had originated on the fifth floor which was left damaged following the blaze.

Fire crews from Deptford, New Cross, Lewisham, East Greenwich and Lee Green fire stations attended the scene and managed to contain the blaze just after 3pm.

Watch manager Matt Cole, who was at the scene, said: "The alarm was raised when the automatic fire detection system fitted throughout the building's communal areas flashed on a control panel at ground floor level.

"Reception staff went to investigate, saw smoke and immediately called 999.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus searched the affected flat and found it empty but rescued a cat. They gave it oxygen and it was later taken to a local vet by neighbours."
