A BORDERS-based law firm isn't the place to work if you want a relaxing day in the office.

Last January bosses at Cycle Law Scotland in Peebles decided to buy a tandem for staff to ride in their lunch breaks.

And the firm's founder Brenda Mitchell also decided to organise a challenge on the two-person bike.

An initial target was set to cover 1,500 miles on the large framed Ridgeback aluminium tandem, with all proceeds from fundraising going to the SCAA (Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance).

The Beast from the East and other snow storms led to the target being reduced to 1,000 miles.

But Cycle Law Scotland still donated £1 for every mile the staff covered before the end of 2018 during their lunch breaks and other challenges.

A final push saw the tandem being taken out twice a day with different pilots and stokers enabled the team to reach their target by November 30.

In the end a total of £1200 was raised which also included donations from clients and other supporters.

And Brenda was delighted.

She said: "As a team we have learned a lot.

"On the tandem, success comes down to trust, teamwork and communication.

"It’s the same approach we adopt at work for all of our clients.

"The tandem was ridden in various events including the Cycle Law Scotland Skinny Tweed, Ride to the Sun, Doddie’5 Ride for MND and the Tour o' the Borders.

"Most people are intrigued to see a tandem and it attracts a lot of attention.

"It moves pretty swiftly on the flat and can motor down the hills too.

"A speed of 51.3 mph down Paddy Slacks was achieved during Tour o’ the Borders which certainly tested the trust between stoker and pilot."

A cheque has now been handed over to Scotland's Charity Air Ambulance.

Chief executive David Craig told us: "SCAA is hugely indebted to everyone who helped realise this tremendous total through the Cycle Law Scotland Tandem Challenge.

"Raising charity funds while helping to stay fit and active is a great way for staff to get involved as a team and push themselves for a good cause.

"A fun active fundraiser such as the Tandem Challenge is a win-win situation for both those taking part and charities such as SCAA who are fortunate enough to benefit from the staff endeavours."

Brenda and her team are now coming up with a fresh challenge for 2019.
