Several drivers have been convicted after they were caught misusing Blue Badge parking permits in Sutton.

Most of them pleaded guilty to using the permits in the borough without the named badge holder present, while others admitted to making fraudulent appeals in an attempt to escape a parking fine.

All of them were convicted at Croydon Magistrates’ Court, in Barclay Road, following a crackdown by council officers.

A Blue Badge is strictly for the person who it is eligible for and only active when it’s being used by, or for, the disabled person when they are present.

If you are disabled, or have a health condition which affects your mobility as a driver, you can apply for one.

But misusing a Blue Badge can be a criminal offence.

Sutton police have now revealed the names of the several drivers who were convicted of misusing Blue Badge permits in Sutton:

1. Mr Keval Patel, of Woodcote Park Avenue, Purley

Mr Patel claimed he was making a delivery when he parked in a loading bay, supplying an invoice and delivery note to back up his claim.

But footage from Woodcote Road revealed two men shopping on the high street.

When the council contacted the business in question they confirmed they had not received any deliveries from Mr Patel’s company.

He was fined £250, ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £30, as well as £250 in costs after he provided false information to avoid paying a penalty charge notice which was issued on March 23 last year.
