A hot-shot team from Croydon took top honours at London's major schools table tennis tournament last weekend.

The Whitgift under 19s lifted the Jack Petchey trophy after beating Wandsworth's Ernest Bevin school 7-1 in the SportsDock at the University of East London.

The team of four featured young Ollie Maric-Murray, just 11-years-old, who won all his matches. He is ranked no1 at under 12 level.

More than 107 players making up 25 teams from 20 schools across London competed in four age groups Boys and Girls under 11, 13, 16 and 19.

Proud Dad and school coach Goran Maric said: “We are pleased with our players. It’s a great competition and always one to win.

"This event is always well run and acts as a spring board for all our players going forward.”

Whitgift also featured in the under 16s event, where Ernest Bevin School took revenge winning the round robin competition, with Whitgift runners up.

Gemma Juma, Operations Director at the Jack Petchey Foundation, said: “The talent on display is inspiring and a tribute to all the young competitors.

"Through sheer hard work and determination, they are becoming such accomplished players.

"Sir Jack Petchey played table tennis for 75 years and he is very proud of our flourishing partnership with TTE.”

Sir Jack Petchey, CBE, 93-year-old founder of the Jack Petchey Foundation is passionate about giving young people freedom and opportunity.

He said: “As a young man I absolutely loved playing table tennis. It kept me fit and active and looking back I can see how it also developed my self-discipline and confidence.

"It’s great to know so many take part in the sport every week. That’s why this programme is so close to my heart.”
