Reports of underage drinking and sexual activity in Walton town centre have decreased, but restrictions in the area aren't about to let up.

There is currently a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) for the town centre that allows Elmbridge Council to impose restrictions with the aim of stopping individuals or groups committing anti-social behaviour (ASB) in the public space.

Since the introduction of the PSPO, recorded incidents of ASB in Walton Central have reduced. Between April and December 2018 there have been 180 recorded incidents of ASB by Surrey Police.

This equates to 74 fewer recorded incidents of the crime compared to the same period in the previous year. This includes a reduction in rowdy, inconsiderate behaviour.

However, there have been minor increases in reported incidents of street drinking and drug litter respectively. At this time, no warning letters or fines have been issued.

The current PSPO is set to expire at midnight on February 28, but the council is now hoping to tack on a fresh two years which would extend the order until 2021.

Councillor Andrew Burley, portfolio holder for community and social affairs says: "In order to ensure that the PSPO is fit for purpose, and considers the needs and freedoms of all residents, the council will be consulting with those living in the PSPO area, as well as discussing with stakeholders such as Surrey Police and the County Council.”

Residents are now being asked for their views on the two year extension to PSPO with letters due to have been sent out to residents last week.

To voice your opinion on the proposal, you are asked to email communitysafety@elmbridge.gov.uk. The deadline for comments is midnight on January 20, 2019.
