Sutton police station’s custody suite – where suspects are taken in after being arrested – is closing this weekend, it has been confirmed.

Sutton Guardian previously reported how it would be shut in “early 2019” as the borough merges with Bromley and Croydon into a borough command unit (BCU).

However, no date had been confirmed at the time back in August last year.

But now the custody suite, in Carshalton Road, will be closing this Sunday (January 20).

Bromley, Croydon and Sutton will soon come together as one unit, thought to be one of the last remaining amid Scotland Yard’s controversial borough policing shake-up.

Sutton police have been contacted for further comment, but a spokesman at the time said “Sutton borough prisoners will be taken to the custody facility in Croydon at Windmill Road”.

He added: “The Sutton custody suite was shared by Merton and Sutton boroughs. Merton are now part of the already formed south west BCU, and have moved their prisoner processing to custody suites in the south west.”

The move was confirmed to be part of the Met’s major BCU plans – with Kingston, Merton, Richmond and Wandsworth having already formed together as the South West branch.

Bromley, Croydon and Sutton are expected to be merged by sometime next month in February but again there’s no specific date known.

A custody suite is an area within a police station where officers process people who have been arrested.

This can involve cells for prisoners, interview rooms, and offices where documents are filled out, for example.
