A Mitcham family business is well on its way to becoming a household name.

Kit’s Peanut’s Chutney was founded by uncle and nephew duo Max and Kit Maharajh, using a vegan recipe that has been in the family for more than a century.

The product is currently stocked in 18 independent food stores across the UK, but the pair are hoping to go bigger than that. In order to do that they started a crowdfunding campaign, setting a lofty goal to raise £100,000 in the first stage.

A week into the campaign, more than £70,000 has already been raised from 30-plus investors.

Co-founder Max was delighted by the progress so far.

“People are more conscious than ever before about the food they are consuming, but this isn’t the problem, the problem is flavour," he said.

"Every brand is offering sugar free, gelatine free, gluten free, and other ‘free-from’ foods that are synthetically made to taste like their originals."

It is fair to say that Max and Kit are confident that the recipe, which has been passed down through five generations, will be a hit with the public.

"We have a recipe that we’ve been making for 100-plus years that tastes incredible, and we don’t need any chemical replacements to cater to the market," Max added.

"We’re here to champion chutney again and remind people that there’s more to chutney than sugary mango mush and bitter fermented limes.”
