A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after he allegedly attempted to push a police officer from a third-floor balcony in Carshalton.

Police were called to reports of a man attacking other family members at an address in Stanley Road at around 8.46pm yesterday (January 13).

Two officers arrived and encountered a 22-year-old man on the stairwell, who sustained injuries to his hand after he punched through a window.

They tried to detain him and one of them was “repeatedly kicked”, according to the force, but it was when the other was put in a stranglehold that the suspect allegedly tried to push her off the balcony.

Backup was called before he was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said both of the female officers were taken to hospital as a precaution, though neither were admitted.

The arrested man was also taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries and is now in custody at a south London police station.

Meanwhile, a 52-year-old man was detained by police for allegedly obstructing police, and is also in custody at a south London police station.

Enquiries remain underway.

Superintendent Steve Wright, of the South Area Command Unit, said: “Both officers were responding to a call for help and were then assaulted, with one officer put in immediate risk of being critically injured.

“I am thankful that the two officers have not been seriously hurt, but this incident shows the courage of my officers and the dangers they can face.”
