A Victorian theatre which is being brought back into use has an reopening date scheduled for sometime in spring next year, it’s been announced.

Cryer Arts Limited, a startup comprising people with experience in construction, leisure and the entertainment industries, revealed the news in its latest update.

It comes as they were chosen by Sutton Council to revive the Charles Cryer Theatre after proposals from 10 candidates for its 25-year lease were whittled down to just five.

After fighting off stiff competition they are now angling to reopen it following its closure.

In a Facebook post, published on December 13, it reads: “We realise that there has been a period of ‘radio silence’ recently, so here’s a bit of an update.

“Currently we are going through all the usual legal formalities, and they are well underway with goodwill on both sides.

“Whilst it’s really difficult to talk about exact timings, with so much to do, we are confident that the bar and then the theatre proper will be ready for a grand opening in the spring of 2019.

“Early in January we hope to have a sort of open evening, where everyone is invited to come along and meet the team and let us know if and how you’d like to become involved.

“So, if you fancy joining our list of volunteers, putting on a show or just generally keen to check out what you can do to help us turn this fine little theatre into the vibrant arts hub it deserves to be [then] come along and join in the fun.”

Councillors at a strategy and resources committee agreed that Cryer Arts Limited should be granted the Charles Cryer’s 25-year lease on October 29.
