A cross-genre music project is bringing Croydon musicians together for a unique performance at Boxpark this Sunday.

Croydon Composers features four local duos performing original material they have written together specially for the event.

The project, which made its debut at Croydon International Mela in 2017, introduces musicians to collaborators they wouldn't necessarily meet in their everyday lives, enabling unique creative partnerships to flourish.

The result is a showcase of the borough's best musicians performing special, genre-mixing compositions to over 1000 locals.

Shri Sriram, producer of Croydon Composers, said: "It was fantastic to see the Oval Tavern full of people enjoying themselves as they grooved along to the music performed by this year’s talented crop of musicians and composers,”

“Last year we played at Scream Lounge and it went really well; this year we’ve expanded the project to work with 16 musicians who have been paired up to write and perform new material.

"We’re now itching to get onto the stage at Boxpark Croydon on December 2nd.

"We’re very grateful for the support of Croydon Council and Arts Council England who have been enthusiastic from the start.”

Mr Sriram, a bassist and composer, is involved in three of the eight performances on the night.

A British Composer Award 2016 winner, he pioneered the Asian underground scene with his electronic duo Badmarsh & Shri and has composed and produced music for theatre, dance, and films including Ang Lee’s ‘Life of Pi’.

Spoken word poet and songwriter Amen Noir will perform with Indian classical percussionist Prathap Ramachandra.

Mr Noir said: “I tend not to label my own music as I prescribe to several musical genre influences: from funk to reggae, to Afro Beat to hip-hop all centred around one main theme: SOUL music.

"This year I’m working with South Asian percussionist Prathap Ramachandra.

"I’m really looking forward to performing at Boxpark – it’ll be great to experience the Croydon Composers collaborations presented in a big environment – potentially for a lot of people. The collaborations are really strong this year.”

Other collaborations bring together Indian classical singer/songwriter Rajesh Raman with Togolese singer Dédé Davi and Turkish drummer Tansay Omar and British jazz songwriter Gill Manly.

A performance from Croydon young composers, which brings together musicians under the age of 18, will also take place earlier in the evening.
