Afternoon chaps, today is International Men's Day, and I hope you are making full use of it.

Back in March I wrote about International Women's Day, and to put it nicely, I had a barrage of questions (abuse) asking me why I was putting women on a pedestal and leaving the men behind.

The short answer is, March 8 wasn't your day lads, it was ours.

But because of this, here is your explainer on International Men’s Day and why it is important.

What is International Men’s Day?

The objective of International Men’s Day is to focus on men's and boys' health both mentally and physically, improve gender relations, promote gender equality and highlight male role models.

It is also to highlight the men that get forgotten in their contributions to community, family, marriage and child care.

When was the first International Men’s Day?

The first event was actually held in 1992 by Thomas Oaster, director of the Missouri Centre for Men’s Studies at the University of Missouri–Kansas City.

It was then relaunched in 1999 by Dr Jerome Teelucksingh, a doctor from Trinidad and Tobago and is now celebrated across the world.

Is there a theme this year?

Yes. This year’s theme is ‘Positive male role models’.

Warwick Marsh, coordinator of internationalmensday.co.uk, said: “We have put the spotlight on positive role models to raise awareness of men's health and wellbeing."

How is the day celebrated?

Past events have included conferences, festivals, fundraisers and television programmes.

You can celebrate how you like, it is about acknowledging that there is a long way to go with equality and finding new ways around it.
