A DENBIGH nurse has been recognised for his work raising the profile of tennis in North Wales.

Steffan Jones, secretary at Denbigh Tennis Club (DTC), received the DP Thomas & GK Williams award at the North Wales Tennis's Annual General Meeting at Wrexham Tennis Centre following a stellar year with the club.

The award, which was started in 1981 and is named in memory of David Price Thomas and Ken Williams, is given to a club member or a senior or junior player who has given devoted service and furthered the game in North Wales.

Steffan, 23 of Denbigh, said: "I am thrilled to have won this award, as it was a huge surprise and is an award that many North Wales stalwarts have won over the years. I am only the third member of DTC to have received this after Russell Jones and Alastair McNab last year."

The award also went to the Denbigh player in recognition of his work promoting the club via social media and appearing on an episode of S4C's Heno as well as raising more than £3,000 club with Alastair McNab fundraiser in April and captaining the newly formed Denbigh Men's 3 team to runners-up in The North Wales Men's Division 3.

In addition to his success on the court, Mr Jones organised end of year club competitions in September, with 36 entries across three tournaments, which included a brand new Ladies Singles category.

Mr Jones will join the North Wales Tennis management committee from Wednesday, December 5 to help promote the game on a wider scale.

Steffan added: "I look forward to working with Vicki and the rest of the North Wales Committee over the next three years to help promote and increase tennis participation over the region.

"They have done a brilliant job of running and organizing events over the years, I'm looking forward to seeing what's in store for both DTC and North Wales Tennis over the next few years."
