Playing fields in Tooting currently only allowed to be booked out by sports teams could be opened up to the public.

Young children could benefit from play equipment on Fishponds playing fields, and residents are being encouraged to suggest other uses for the area as part of a public consultation.

The council’s environment spokesman, Cllr Steffi Sutters, said: “This green space could provide a much better local amenity for people living nearby.

“If we can make these playing fields more attractive, perhaps by installing play equipment, and encouraging greater use as an open space then I’m sure that would be welcomed by people living in this part of Tooting.”

People who live nearby have been asking the council to open up the fields, and it did so for a trial period last summer.

Following that success, it is now gathering the views of the wider public.

The existing pitches would remain, and will still be used by the local schools whatever happens.
