Lee Bowyer says he is desperate to bring in a left back during the January transfer window.

Chris Solly once again deputised out of position on the left of the defence, instead of his usual right-sided berth, during Charlton’s 2-0 win over Doncaster Rovers.

While he impressed alongside Anfernee Dijksteel, Bowyer knows it’s only a stop-gap solution while Lewis Page may be out for longer than first thought.

Charlton tried to secure a left back during the summer but were forced to “prioritise”, according to the Addicks boss, and instead had to bolster their depleted central midfield.

With the January transfer window looming, Bowyer is keen to add depth.

Bowyer said: “I need a left back. I need a left back for cover for Page.

“Chris Solly is doing a great job out there but it's uncomfortable for him, you can tell at times, but he's doing a great job for me.

“If there's someone that I could've brought in the summer it would've been a left back but we had to prioritise and just hope that Page wouldn't get injured, but unfortunately for us he's got injured and we ain't go not cover there.

“That's definitely somewhere I need to bring someone in during January.”

When asked whether that’s a real possibility, he added: “Yeah. We need a left back, because at the moment Page is going to be out for another six weeks.

“He's been out for four. We thought it was only going to be four to six but now it's gone to six to 10. Well, to 10. Minimum.

“We can't keep doing that [playing Solly at left back] because if Anfernee gets injured then who are we going to play at right back?

“We need a left back, yeah, for sure.”

Page, who injured his hip Charlton's 5-3 defeat to Scunthorpe United, is one of two long-term casualties for Bowyer at the moment alongside Jake Forster-Caskey as he recovers from a season-ending knee injury.

Patrick Bauer is back to running again while fighting to gain full fitness, and Billy Clarke is featuring for the club's under-23s following his ACL rupture last December.

Ben Reeves, who suffered a knock in the Doncaster Rovers victory, was withdrawn in the 68th minute for Mark Marshall.

The winger’s 22-minute cameo was his first appearance for Charlton since August.
