A new micro-pub could soon be opening in Southborough – but not everybody is pleased with the pint-sized plans.

The would-be landlord has applied for a licence to convert a former builders’ office in Southborough Lane into a micro-pub.

Neighbours living nearby said another watering hole would increase noise and anti-social behaviour.

The Chequers is down the road from the proposed boozer, and there is a Harvester in the opposite direction.

One objector said: “Myself and my wife and I’m sure others are trying to raise a family along an already busy and dangerous road.

“Southborough Lane has already two pubs in the vicinity and already has a noise disturbance and growing crime and disorder problem.

“The opening for such an establishment will further compound the problem with the consumption and selling of alcohol.”

Another neighbour said: “Two drinking establishments so close to each other is asking for trouble.

“Late-night drinkers already leave the Chequers at closing time and can be heard shouting and sometimes arguing after excessive alcohol, and invariably in larger groups.”

Councillors will discuss the licence application at a meeting next Wednesday, November 7.

The applicant said he will have CCTV and operate ‘Challenge 25’ at the pub.

According to council documents, there would be a notice of opening and closing hours advertised and the outside drinking area would not be used after 10.45pm except for smokers.

The micro-pub would open from midday until 11.15pm on Sunday to Thursday and until 11.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
