Croydon schools rank amongst the lowest in London for GCSE results, new figures reveal.

GCSE results published by the Department of Education (DfE) rank Croydon fourth bottom out of all London boroughs.

Croydon’s ‘attainment 8’ score, a figure which combines and averages students’ marks across eight GCSE subjects, was 45.7, higher only than Lewisham, Lambeth and Greenwich.

Top of the list was nearby Sutton, with a score of 58.

Responding to the figures, a council spokesman said: "Attainment in London, when compared to the rest of the country, is very strong and attainment in Croydon is improving within this high-performing area.

“Schools in Croydon perform better than the national average in Progress 8, which is the headline figure used to assess the amount of progress made by students from their attainment on entry.

"The "Progress 8 measure shows that children in Croydon schools make better progress than their peers nationally.

“We will continue to work with all schools to further improve outcomes for our children and young people.”

Attainment 8 measures a student’s average grade across eight GCSE subjects.

For each student, the points for their eight subjects are added up and divided by 10.

A school’s attainment 8 score is the average of all its students scores, and is used by the DfE to evaluate school performance.

The average score for English state schools in 2018 is 46.4.
