Plans to invest £9m in Croydon's transport system, including funding for a cycle hire scheme, have been approved for submission to the Mayor of London

The anticipated funding of £9m over three years also covers resources for cycle-training, new electric vehicle charging points, and the delivery of projects to increase walking and cycling to and from schools.

Councillor Stuart King, cabinet lead for environment and transport, said: “Getting transport infrastructure right is a key step in helping Croydon achieve its ambitious goals.

“We want to improve transport across Croydon, investing in making it easier for everyone to travel by bus, cycle or foot. We are investing in improving journeys and making Croydon a safer and easier place to live, work and visit.

“The Mayor’s priorities set out how to help everyone make the most of London and we are committed to delivering healthier streets and sustainable improvements for Croydon.

“Our plans will help support the Mayor’s Transport Strategy and will see road danger and traffic levels in Croydon reduced. It will also promote healthy streets and liveable neighbourhoods across the borough.”

The strategy aims to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on London’s roads to zero by 2041 and increasing the proportion of journeys by foot, cycle or public transport in Croydon to 50% by 2021.

The document, which sets out a programme of investment running into 2022, was approved by Croydon’s cabinet at a meeting on Monday 15 October.

Subject to the decision being called in to the Scrutiny & Overview Committee the paper will be sent to the Mayor and Transport for London for review and approval.
