A Longcross soldier’s photo of a horse jumping over two officers has scooped a prize in an army photography competition.

Winners were announced on October 18 at the Imperial War Museum, where a collection of the winning photographs is exhibited.

Lance Corporal of Horse Adam Blackmore-Heal won in the ‘amateur sports and adventurous training’ category for his photograph titled ‘making an entrance’.

The 31-year old said: “Taking photographs of horses is sometimes not seen as very military, so to win this category is to demonstrate that horses are still very prevalent in the military.”

The picture was taken at Bodney Camp, where his regiment was holding an opening day for the public to come and see a variety of displays following their annual regimental training.

Mr Blackmore-Heal, who has been in the army for 12 years, said: “It was hit and miss if I was going to get the photograph.

“I knew the riding master was going to do this jump over the two commanding officers but I was photographing something else at the time.

“I heard the crowd woohoo as he performed the jump and realised I’d missed it, but he went around to do it again and I was able to capture the photo.”

The annual competition is open to all regular and reserve personnel, staff and cadets of the combined cadet force, army cadet force, university officer training and some civilians and contractors who work with the army.

The aim of the competition is to capture images taken across the army that would be otherwise unobtainable.
