The Slade Cafe has opened on Plumstead Common and is already bringing in the crowds.

What used to be an unused block of early 20th century public toilets is now an exciting new hub for the community.

The cafe will have a strong focus on sustainability, from saving coffee grounds and composting food waste to using biodegradable packaging.

The owners are keen to encourage customers to bring their own take-away containers and coffee cups to minimise unnecessary waste.

Cllr Danny Thorpe, leader of Greenwich Council, said: "This is a project that will benefit the local community immensely and I know that everyone has worked so hard to make this project happen.

"It will be a wonderful addition to the local community and I would encourage everyone to come down and visit."

The cafe will also offer a stage area, exhibition and common spaces and is available to hire for groups, meetings, events and performances.

Kieran Barry, head chef and owner of the café, said: "The café will celebrate the diverse and vibrant cultures of Plumstead. Locals and visitors can expect simple, healthy dishes, made in-house wherever possible, including bread, cakes, pastries, salads, soups and sandwiches alongside high-quality barista-made coffee.

"All ingredients will be well sourced, and we aspire to use local, organic and Fairtrade wherever we can."

He added: "I grew up in Plumstead and my family all still live here so I’m excited to give something back to the community that I know and love.

"We believe in creating a thriving community hub with good food at its heart."

The café is now open for breakfast and lunch, with evening dining from 2019.

It is open Tuesday to Friday from 7.30am to 4.30pm and at weekends from 9am to 4pm.
