For one day only, Wimbledon turned into a scene from a Bollywood film.

This was to celebrate the annual Wimbledon Diwali mela.

More than 350 packed into Sacred Heart Church on October 13 and were treated to everything from Indian food to traditional dancing.

Co-organiser of the event and Wimbledon woman Neha Malhotra said the performance of the story of Diwali was a hit with young and old.

"Through the rehearsals, culminating in final performance today, our aim was to educate our Merton children about the stories that form the basis of Indian culture and traditions," she said.

Wimbledon MP Stephen Hammond was the guest of honour at the occasion and said he hoped the event would be "one of many to come in the future".

In just its second year as an organised event in town, hopes are high to keep the tradition alive for years to come.

"It was great to see the response from the community," co-organiser Pragya Kanodia said.

"It gave us the enthusiasm to do more."
