Croydon town hall and central library were evacuated this afternoon.
Fire alarms were sounded at approximately 2.50pm, according to reports.
Large numbers of people vacated the building, moving across the road to Queen's Gardens.
It is not currently known why the alarms went off.
The library reopened just before 4pm, with both staff and members of the public re-entering the building.
