Plans are in the works to erect a wire-frame Tommy silhouette at a Mitcham war memorial.

Merton Council has submitted a planning application that would see the Tommy placed next to the Lower Green West memorial behind Vestry Hall.

Just last year the site was given a Grade II listing by Historic England after backing by the Mitcham Cricket Green Community and Heritage group.

Now that same group's secretary, Tony Burton, has given his backing to the new council project, as long as certain criteria are met.

"This would be a timely recognition of the important role played by the recently listed war memorial in remembering those who have given their lives in war," he said.

"It is important that any statue in such a sensitive location will stand the test of time and is not allowed to decay.

"We will be asking Merton Council to make any planning consent time limited and conditional on good maintenance and repair."
