A craft beer shop and taproom offering live music and spoken word nights could soon open up in Croydon.

Coalition Brewing Company wants to open a bar at 43 St George’s Walk.

The company was set up in 2016 and currently brews pale ales and lager at Hepworth and Co in Pulborough, West Sussex.

But one of the directors William Parkes said in time he wants to open a microbrewery in London, potentially in Croydon.

William runs the company with Ross Cadenhead, Matt Clark and Christian Stevenson – also known as DJ BBQ.

The 34-year-old, who has lived near Wandle Park since January, thinks there is appetite for another craft beer company in Croydon.

Alongside their own beers the new St George’s Walk shop would stock beers from other local breweries and whiskeys from Scottish distilleries.

“We wanted to be involved in one of the most exciting industries at the moment – I’ve been a home brewer all my life,” said William.

“The idea was to set up a place where we could have a central office and sell.

“In the area there isn’t an awful lot for craft beer drinkers.

“It’s another pub which is offering something a little bit different.”

Coalition has applied to Croydon Council for a licence and as well as serving drinks it would allow live entertainment from 8-10pm Tuesday to Saturday and from 1-7pm on Sundays.

The application said: “We are planning on having monthly jam sessions/open mic nights where locals can join a couple professional musicians.

“The music will be lightly amplified – it is important that conversation can still take place in the main area.

“We anticipate the music being in the acoustic/folk/jazz genres.”

Alcohol would be served from 4pm to 11pm Monday-Thursday and until midnight on Friday and Saturday nights.

Coalition expects to have up to 80 customers at the busiest times.

The public entrance to the site is under the covered bit of St George’s Walk and the bar also wants to be able to serve alcohol in designated area of the walk outside the main entrance.

As long as the licence is approved Coalition’s new home is expected to be up and running by the end of the year.

Public comments on the application can be made until October 19 and should be sent to  licensing@croydon.gov.uk
