An unexploded Second World War bomb was found in Purley yesterday evening.

Police were called at 5pm to reports of an explosive shell found on Imperial Way.

Cordons were put in place on Imperial Way and Pegasus Road, causing bad traffic.

Specialist officers removed the bomb for controlled detonation.

The cordons were lifted at around 7pm.

A Met police spokesperson said: "Police were called at 17:00hrs on Thursday, 4 October to reports of an explosive shell found in Imperial Way, Croydon.

"Officers attended the location and cordons put in place. A WW2 shell was recovered by specialist officers. Cordons have been lifted."
