People are complaining about long delays and traffic build-ups as “urgent” roadworks take place in Worcester Park this week.

Footage published online by Bonita Amelia Reynolds described it as “mayhem”, causing “hours” of delays.

The roadworks, in Malden Road, are being carried out to fix a broken drain amid recent flooding issues, according to authorities.

Signs have been placed in the immediate areas to warn motorists and pedestrians of what is going on.

This project is being undertaken by Kingston and Sutton councils alongside Transport for London (TfL), with it expected to be finished by Friday (October 5).

But people have expressed their frustration over being stuck in long queues as cars and buses remain in slow-moving traffic within surrounding areas, such as Central Road.

Queen Elizabeth Foundation charity manager Ms Reynolds, who also described the traffic at one point as a “nightmare”, said: “My daughter was sat at a bus stop for an hour and 45 minutes and the bus was only at the top of the road.

“That’s how slow it’s moving. Buses are empty, people are getting off and walking to Malden or Worcester Park train station for a better option, but even then there are more roadworks in other areas.”

Video footage and photos published on Facebook show some of what has been going on since the project began on October 1 this week.

People have now taken to social media and voiced their opinions as the roadworks continue.

A Kingston Council spokeswoman said: “Night works were not possible or practical because of the excavation required.

“In order for the work to be carried out safely and enable traffic to flow, four way temporary traffic signals are being used. Advance warning signs were in place in the week before the works started.”
