When it comes to disobeying the road rules, it turns out drivers in Mitcham are the worst.

A Freedom of Information request by the Wimbledon Guardian has revealed that since the beginning of 2017 up until September 11 this year, Merton motorists have been fined £10,999,285 by the council for everything from illegal right turns to driving in a bus lane.

Councillor Martin Whelton, cabinet member for regeneration, environment and housing, said people are free to appeal any fine, but that a strong stance must be taken towards illegal driving.

“Merton's approach to motorists who break road traffic regulations is firm but fair," he said.

"We are completely transparent about where enforcement measures are in place with all of our bus lanes clearly marked with the appropriate road markings and signs, detailing the days and times at which they are in operation, as well as signs indicating that camera enforcement with automatic name plate recognition takes place at these locations.

"We have also published their locations on our website."

Also revealed in the FOI was the roads and junctions where the most amount of fines have been handed out.

At the top of the list is the bus lane in Upper Green Lane, Mitcham. This hot spot for bad driving, like all the others in the top ten, are monitored by automatic number plate recognition cameras. (Scroll down to see the entire top ten).

Mr Whelton added that by enforcing these rules and regulations, the environment would be better off for it.

"As we move towards becoming an even more sustainable borough, we have had to find better ways to tackle air pollution," he said.

"Easing congestion on our roads is a step in the right direction to improving air quality.

"We are committed to listening to the concerns of local residents and through taking rigorous action we can keep the borough moving and help ensure our bus lanes are not impeded along with speeding up journey times.

"For any car user who feels they have been unfairly issued with a ticket, there is also a full appeal mechanism available to them on any penalty charge issued. Any surplus income generated also helps pay towards freedom passes which enables over 20,000 Merton residents to travel free on public transport.”
