A hot yoga studio could be coming to Croydon if a planning application is successful.

The application which has been submitted to the borough is for a change of use of the former Printel office in Cross Road.

The ground floor warehouse on the site has been empty for five years and the first floor has been empty since March.

It would be a franchise of Hotpod Yoga, which has more than 30 branches across the country, including in Hackney, Wimbledon and Brixton.

The yoga centre would have classes of up to 21 students with classes running from 7am-9.30pm Monday to Friday and from 9am-6.30pm at the weekend.

A design statement written by applicant Kirsty Aryee states: “Hotpod yoga is a unique concept, taking place in an immersive cocoon like pod needing specific spatial requirements.”

It adds that fitting out the cocoon as well as showers and changing rooms is expected to take three months and would be “carried out with minimal external disruption to the surrounding areas”.

At the moment the two-floor building is made up of three self-contained areas – a ground floor office, warehouse and first floor office.

If successful, Hotpod Yoga would be made up of a co-working office area on the ground floor with the yoga classes taking place in the warehouse at the back. The first floor would remain as office use.

In her application, Ms Aryee added: “We’ve chosen Croydon as a thriving and growing commercial and residential area and there needs to be more activities to sustain the community.

“Croydon is one of the largest boroughs by population and there are no existing hot yoga facilities.

“The opening hours will capture the peak trade of after work customers who like to partake in yoga after a busy day at the office.

“This is a silent business and is already operating in several residential locations Brixton and South Wimbledon with later opening times without any disturbance to the neighbourhood.”

Public consultation on the plans closes on October 5 and a decision is set to be made by November 7.
