Pictures have just come in of the annual Kingston Crown Court procession and service, which marks the start of a new judicial year.

The procession, which took place today (September 24), started at the Guildhall, continuing through to the Ancient Market Place, and finished at the All Saints Church.

Cadets from Kingston Grammar School Combined Cadet Force and the Kingston Police Voluntary Cadet Corp lined the route of the procession.

Public officials took part in the procession, including several councillors, former and current mayors, magistrates, the deputy lieutenant and the high steward.

Surbiton Royal British Legion Buglers sounded the arrival of the judges at All Saints Church.

According to Kingston Crown Court and the Surrey History Centre, the tradition dates back to the middle ages and the annual opening of the Surrey Assizes.

Twice a year, commissions of judges from Royal Courts in London were sent out to counties to try serious offences which could not be dealt with by the local county court.

Court session began with the judges walking to the local parish church where the sheriff's chaplain preached the assize sermon.
