A group of Travellers that illegally set up camp at a Wimbledon sports ground have left in time for this weekend's games.

The group of caravans first appeared at Richardson Evans Memorial Playing Fields at about 10pm on September 10.

Not long after, there were reports of cars being upturned, goalposts being damaged as well as being used as clotheslines.

This prompted the owners of the ground, Wimbledon and Putney Commons, to go to the High Court to obtain the right to evict the group.

This proved successful as two days after they first arrived, the Travellers had moved on.

"Following the illegal incursion of caravans and associated vehicles into the Richardson Evans Memorial Playing Fields, action was taken in the High Court to obtain a Writ of Possession to enable us to remove them immediately," a post written on the Commons; website read.

"The vehicles were moved off site by 6pm on Wednesday, September 12.

"The Conservators are extremely grateful to the Burlington Group for their swift and professional resolution to this illegal incursion.

"Further to this action, we were advised to post copies of the Writ of Possession around the area it covers - Wimbledon Common and Putney Heath - in order to publicise that it is in place.

"These signs are therefore authorised by the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators and will enable WPCC to take immediate action in the event that there is a further unauthorised incursion on the Common."

There were concerns that clubs such as clubs such as London Cornish Rugby Club, Old Thorntonians and Wandsworth Borough, who all play on the fields, would not be able to play this weekend. That issue now seems to be resolved.
